Farrington forces turnovers to beat Roosevelt

Fourth-ranked
Farrington held Roosevelt without a first down in the opening half and
picked off four passes in all for a 33-7 victory at Ticky Vasconcellos
Stadium.

That comeback win, coming off a stunning loss at Castle
last week, pleased Farrington’s homecoming crowd of roughly 2,500
devotees.

“It’s a big improvement. We were not letting up,” linebacker Lancelot Williams said. “We kept up the tempo.”

Farrington
improved to 2-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East (4-1
overall), while Roosevelt fell to 0-2 (0-4 overall).

Another senior linebacker, Justin Vele, had a sack for a safety and also picked off a pass.

“We’re
taking it more serious at practice,” he said. “It’s a long season. It’s
great to respond to a loss with a game like this. We have to take it
one game at a time.”

While Williams and Vele spearheaded the
defensive effort, Keanu Foki added a sack. Defensive backs Leland
Mitchell, Bryston Doctolero and Paul Solomon added interceptions.
Solomon’s pick resulted in a 33-yard touchdown in the second half.

Farrington
spread the wealth offensively. After a string of 100-yard rushing
games, Scotland Smith scored early and finished with just 44 yards on 14
attempts. Tavale Masalosalo got the bulk of the work with 16 carries
for 83 yards and a touchdown, while fullback Jordan Hakuole also got
some touches as the Govs efficiently racked up 179 rushing yards on 43
carries.

Mixing their I formation with an occasional shotgun set,
the Governors scored on their second possession and never lost momentum.
Smith’s 12-yard burst off the left side gave the Govs a 7-0 lead with
5:34 to go in the first quarter.

A high snap to Roosevelt punter
Ashton McKay forced him to flee pressure, and he was brought down for no
gain at the Rough Riders’ 28-yard line. Four plays later, Jared Hakuole
found his brother, Jordan, on a swing pass for a 16-yard touchdown, and
the Govs had a 14-0 lead with 2:35 to go in the first.

Unable to
muster a first down in the opening half, Roosevelt’s offense went just
one play into its ensuing series before Kaipo Pale was picked off by
Mitchell near the sideline.

Farrington turned that into a 44-yard field goal by Andrew Gangloff for a 17-0 lead with 44 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Roosevelt
went to Matthew Lono-Holani at quarterback midway through the second
quarter, but he was sacked in the Rough Riders’ end zone by Vele for a
safety. Farrington led 19-0 with 4:28 left in the first half.

Roosevelt tallied 14 total yards of offense in the first half.

Lono-Holani’s 15-yard touchdown pass on a post route by McKay cut the lead to 19-7 with 1:35 to go in the third quarter

Solomon’s interception return for a score with 4:01 left ended any semblance of lingering drama.

Masalosalo tacked on his lone touchdown, a 5-yard cutback run, with 1:34 remaining.
